Matic to miss start of season

Nemanja Matic has been ruled out of the start of the 2018-19 Premier League season after having surgery on an abdominal injury, Manchester United have confirmed.

The midfielder has not appeared in any of our games during the tour of the United States after joining up late following his participation at the 2018 World Cup with Serbia.

Matic missed just one of our Premier League games last season following his move from rivals Chelsea 12 months ago.

However, the 31-year-old will certainly miss our season opener against Leicester City on Friday 10 August at Old Trafford having undergone surgery.

Jose Mourinho told MUTV:

“Matic came from the World Cup with an injury and the time he had to rest on holiday was not enough to resolve the problem.

“He went to Philadelphia for a top specialist and he didn’t leave the clinic. He immediately had surgery.”

Nemanja Matic has returned to Manchester to continue his rehabilitation.

It is not yet known whether Paul Pogba will be available for our season opener against the Foxes due to his participation in the World Cup final with France less than two weeks ago.  However, Fred, Ander Herrera and Scott McTominay should all be available to the boss as players who can play in central midfield as part of his 4-3-3 formation.
