José Mourinho has come out sharply attacking the below par performances by Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, blaming the duo for Manchester United’s terrible performance against Brighton, resulting in Brighton scoring their first ever win over the Red Devils since 1982.
The win has helped Brighton move up on the leader board ahead of West Ham and in with a chance of Top 10 finish in the league.
A great multitude of punters were backing Manchester United to easily come out victorious in this match. It’s worth noting that with FIFA World Cup round the corner, the betting interest in EPL has also increased significantly. Punters are scouring all kinds of online bookmakers, trying and testing them during the EPL games, to ensure that they know where to get the best World Cup odds when the long-awaited event starts in mid-June this year.
Disastrous performance overall
Neither Alexis Sanchez nor Romelu Lukaku were fit for this match, and hence didn’t start at the Amex Stadium. Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford were seen labouring against Albion, without much success. Now everyone is questioning if both these players will stay at Manchester United next season?
It was only David de Gea in the visitors team who showed a handful of impressive moves, in what could be termed as a disastrous performance for the Reds overall. The defeat made José Mourinho question if his players were as desperate as him to achieve a top two finish in the league.
Talking to the press, Mourinho said that the performance was not good enough. He had made 6 changes in the team’s line up and urged the selected players to give an impressive performance prior to the FA Cup final. But in the end the replacement players didn’t perform as expected, and when that happens, the result cannot be good.
He reasoned with the journalists that perhaps he’d now be asked why he never played X, Y or Z players too much in the league, and why always Lukaku? He hoped that the people would have gotten the answer that why it’s always Lukaku. In his opinion, Manchester United isn’t as good a team as people think of it to be at the individual level.
He further said, “I knew what was going to happen, and I told them, but that is what we got. Brighton had one target, to get the point and celebrate their Premier League survival. Our target was to get points to help us finish second and they clearly showed that, for them, it is more important for them to stay in the Premier League than for us to finish second. They showed it from the first minute and we didn’t show that. We were not able to motivate ourselves.” Interestingly, Anthony Martial has always been on the list of players that Mourinho wanted to axe.
José Mourinho further expressed frustration that there is no hope if the players don’t show the kind of honesty and passion expected from them on the field. He lamented that the team didn’t show the willingness to prove that the second position really mattered to them.
